A Celebration of Hilary Munro, WAB Board Member
The WAB community is invited to a celebration held in honor of Hilary Munro, who is stepping down from the WAB Board after nearly 15 years of active service. The celebration will take place Tuesday May 20, 4:00pm, Lotus Lounge (ES).

Saturday Art Studio
The Saturday Art Studio is offering a 6-week series of bi-lingual art classes for children ages 5 - 10 beginning Saturday May 10 at WAB.
WAB's Community of Caring
Over the past week, the WAB community came together and showed amazing support for WAB family member Steve Aldred. For several years, Steve has taught as a substitute at WAB and coached countless soccer teams, for the Tigers as well as Sports Beijing. In February, he was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma and faced the daunting challenge of covering the costs of treatment and medical care.

Olympic Volunteer Opportunities with the Australian Olympic Committee
Did you know that almost every Australian Olympic athlete will be visiting WAB this summer? As part of WAB’s Olympic partnership with the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC), Australian athletes will be dropping by the ES Gym to pick up their uniforms for the Beijing Games. The AOC seeks volunteers to help pass out uniforms, and many other tasks, including greeting the athletes and their families. The WAB community is invited to share the Olympic spirit with the AOC by volunteering. Please note the application deadline: Friday April 18.
WAB Celebrates First Alumni Gathering in London
Since its inception in 1994, Western Academy of Beijing has been home to more than 4,000 students, parents, and staff members. Today, the WAB community is spread far and wide across six continents and more than 75 countries. We are celebrating this community by starting a new tradition of alumni gatherings around the world, starting with the WAB Alumni gathering in London on February 4.
The Green Long March
On Saturday April 5, the 2008 Green Long March officially kicks off with its Opening Ceremony at Beijing Forestry University (BFU). The organizers of the largest youth conservation movement in China, FutureGenerations/CHINA and BFU, will build on last year's success by including national campaigns to reduce energy and protect resources on Earth Day and World Environment Day.
WAB Hosts Weekend Workshop for Chinese Teachers
On the last Saturday of March, WAB hosted a workshop on Teaching Chinese as a Second Language for 23 Chinese teachers from seven international schools around the Beijing area. The workshop, which focused on teaching reading and writing, was led by Li Ping of Hong Kong United World College.

Rural Women in the Know
Last Friday, March 7, a group of 32 rural women school teachers visited WAB. They all came from Suichuan, a poor mountainous area in Jiangxi, a Red Army base area during the 1920s and 1930s. The teachers are up in Beijing for two weeks of professional development, hosted by the Rural Women’s School, a non-profit institution that has been supported by the WAB community for some years. The teachers came to WAB to learn about WAB’s approach to learning.
In the Spotlight: Chinese Film Forum
A diverse audience of around 75 WAB parents, staff, students and community members gathered in the Blu Theatre last week to attend a panel discussion with three leading professionals from the Chinese film industry. Many thanks to WAB parents Gu Changwei, Jiang Wenli and Peter Loehr for sharing their expertise with the WAB community. WAB is also grateful for the support of Austen Morris, sponsor of WAB's Distinguished Speaker Series.
13-Year-Old Philanthropist Inspires GIN Participants
Austin Gutwein, a 13-year-old junior high student from the US, inspired GIN participants with the story of "Hoops for Hope," a fundraising drive he started, at the age of 9, to help orphaned children whose parents died of AIDS.
WAB Wild Community Trek
WAB Wild has kicked off the new season with a trek for Middle School students and their parents in the Miyun Mountains. This year a Chinese Rural Women’s group joined us. Kaarina, a member of the WAB Wild Adventure Guides Enterprise, has worked a lot with this group, and this was a great opportunity for WAB Wild and the Rural Women’s group to collaborate on a community event.
"Factory Kid" Returns for WAB Visit
The last time Mads Meier-Hansen stepped foot on WAB's campus, he was still learning his basic maths and referred to the school as "The Factory." Fast forward to seven years later, the Meier-Hansens of Denmark--father Per, mother Gette, and Mads of course-were in for a treat, when they dropped by WAB to take in our 'new' campus and say hello to familiar friends.
Job-a-Like Sessions "Fabulous Form of Professional Development"
WAB recently hosted IB DP Job-a-Like sessions for over 30 teachers from various IB DP schools in Beijing in the areas of Biology, Chemistry and Geography. These sessions were organized through the cooperation of WAB IB DP Coordintor, Jenny Pollock, and coordinators from BISS, BCIS and IST.

Every year, WAB staff gather for a Cultural Forum to learn more about the educational systems of countries represented by WAB students. This year's forum focused on Finnish and Chinese culture and education.
