WAB Distinguished Speaker Series: Inquiry Mathematics with Charles Lovitt
Monday November 17, 2:00pm, HS Amphitheater

The term Inquiry Mathematics is used to describe an approach to teaching maths curriculum that uses open-ended mathematic problems that go beyond traditional formulas. Students take ownership over their problem-solving with Inquiry Mathematics, often by approaching a problem with the essential question of which forumla to use and why. Often students are asked to find multiple ways to solve a problem, and then explain why one is better than the rest. The aim is to combine essential skill practice with the equally important ability to think, apply reasoning and communicate clearly.

About the Speaker: Charles Lovitt has been involved in Mathematics Professional Development for many years. He has directed several Australian National and State mathematics education projects. He is the former national director of Mathematics projects for the Australian Curriculum Corporation and generated such projects as The Mathematics Task Center Project, the Chance and Data project and more recently the Maths300 project. He is now a consultant and a regular keynote and workshop presenter both in Australia and internationally.
