ES counselors, Ken Perkins and Siv Sandberg presented a series of three parent workshops in March. The focus was on helping parents understand their children’s learning styles and needs and how to support their academic growth.
One goal of the workshops was to give parents strategies for coaching and mentoring their children, while building and encouraging independence.
During one activity the parents were asked to draw on their own experiences and to think about a mentor, coach or teacher who had really made a difference for them, and to determine what qualities or characteristics they believed made the mentor successful.
Below is the list of qualities determined by the parents as being important for successfully mentoring their own children. A positive mentor is:
- Understanding
- Respectful
- A Visionary
- Principled
- Fair
- Firm
- Shows complete acceptance
- Patient
- Humanistic
- Pushes your knowledge
- Treats you more like an adult- expects you to be responsible
- Humorous
- Supportive - “Yes You Can”
- Calm/Peaceful
Thanks to all parents who shared and inspired during the workshops. If you have further questions or other concerns, please feel free to make an appointment with an ES Counselor by contacting Julie, ES Counseling Assistant, at julie_yu@wab.edu.
