After seven intensive months of active enquiry, research, reflection and dedication, Grade 10 students proudly presented their MYP Personal Projects at a special exhibition held in the HS on Tuesday evening. The Grade 10 Personal Project is a significant and pivotal learning experience for all MYP students. Students begin working on their Personal Projects in August, and submitted them on February 25.
The Personal Project provides students with an opportunity for open-ended inquiry into an issue or topic of interest to them. It is a demanding and rigorous process that students go through – they have to manage their time carefully, establish well-defined goals, meet regularly with a mentor and follow an extensive research process. Many students discover a career path through their experience of the project, and all have the opportunity to explore in-depth an area of interest to them perhaps for the first time in their academic life. Importantly, the project allows students to pursue something they are truly passionate about.
The depth of creativity and academic curiosity evident in this year’s projects was extraordinary. WAB’s Mosaic of Diversity was illustrated, in authentic and meaningful ways, through the individual projects on display from all Grade 10 students.
Examples of this year’s projects include the following:
• Researching the history of tennis rackets and designing a new and modern racket
• Designing and building furniture fusing together Korean and Chinese design elements
• Writing, illustrating and self-publishing a bi-lingual children’s book, then selling it to raise money for charity
Other students created video games, learned the art of topiary and studied trends in Chinese adoption laws and practices, while others focused on projects based in their interest in fashion, photography, the visual arts and architecture. Several students offered live performances of original music and dance pieces.
This year’s Personal Project Exhibition was a celebration of the hard work and diverse talents of WAB’s Grade 10 students, and a demonstration of their creativity and capacity for critical thinking and high-level reflection. Congratulations Grade 10!
