| Is this photo old or new? It's both! Grade 6 art students are blending the art of early photography with the digital age to create emotive images of their daily lives. |
The Grade 6 Art students have been the first to use the HUB's new black and white darkroom, which is equipped with a revolving black door, ventilation and five black and white enlarger machines. MS Art Teacher Sarah McCarrison and HS Art Teacher Tamara Palmer are testing out the new darkroom with students now and plan on making much use of it with next year's classes.
"I am planning to incorporate more photography units into the MS Art
course next school year, and Tamara plans to work with her Grade 10 and IB Diploma students," Sarah said.
"I have a lot of experience with this area.
I am also interested in trying incorporate this older technology with
the digital technology and the computer software programs we have
access to here at WAB."
Grade 6 students were the first group to brave the darkroom and dabble in processing their own images. They learned the art of black and white photo developing and made photograms (similar effect to an X-ray) and pinhole camera photos using a shoebox and pinhole lens. It has been an exciting unit and the students love to watch as their pictures appear like magic under the red lights.
"It's heaps of fun to try new pieces of art," said Fares.
Annie agreed, "It was especially fun because we have never tried this before."
After creating the pinhole photos these were scanned into the computer and the image negative was changed into a positive, it was great to mix old technology with new.
"You always see pictures on the internet like this and now we can make them ourselves!" said Sid.
