MYP: Making Real Life Connections

Hasfat Abiola speaks with Grade 7 students, a month after visiting WAB as a keynote speaker for the Global Issues Network conference in the HS.

Recently, Grade 7 English students welcomed Hafsat Abiola, an inspirational Nigerian activist who lives in Beijing, to the Middle School. The students have been studying Beverley Naidoo's novel, The Other Side of Truth, about the fate of two Nigerian children who are forced to flee to London after their mother is murdered in a political killing. Hafsat's personal story is strikingly similar, and she shared her own experiences with the Grade 7 students. She also answered the many thoughtful questions the students had prepared for her. Hafsat's insights into the way politics can touch personal lives and the need to stand true to your principles struck a chord with many of the students. This was a wonderful example of the way MYP curriculum, literature and real life are all connected.
